What to Expect in Stage 1: Chiropractic Relief Care
When it comes to chiropractic care, there are some carefully-followed steps that have been designed to lead to the best chance of success. Rather than jumping in and looking to cure the problem instantly, the whole practice has been considered to provide clients with sustainable results. Often, services will look to provide the quickest care which is great in terms of a fast recovery but it typically means the injury will come back again some time in the future.
With the process we’re going to start today, the recovery occurs on a fundamental level and this kind of attention should lead to long-term results. In stage one, it’s all about relief care and we’re going to discuss everything you need to know before progressing!
Patient Forms - As chiropractors in Plantation, we can help with any issues you have within your body. Whether you have an injury or perhaps you just want to improve your overall health, this can be discussed in the first meeting before then arranging an appointment for your first session. With injuries, which will be our main focus for today, it starts with relief care and it starts with patient forms.
From the moment you set foot through the door, we hope you notice the family-type atmosphere we’ve been building over the past few years. Before we can proceed, you’ll be asked to fill out some simple registration forms and this will allow us to get a full background of your medical history as well as information regarding your condition or injury.
If you have any questions at this point, don’t hesitate to ask our receptionist and they will provide any help they can. For the forms themselves, it’s important they are completed as accurately as possible because this allows Dr Popkin and his team to provide the best level of care. With a full picture of your medical history, the care can be personalized to you and your body; this is what allows us to offer fantastic results.
Consultation - Once we have your information, we can then proceed to the consultation and you’ll see Dr David Popkin, Dr Michele Grundstein or Dr Richard Culligan. In a relaxed atmosphere, we can talk about any problems with your health, any concerns you have, and the potential treatment options we can offer moving forward. Essentially, this first step in the process is to allow our team a better knowledge of you and your condition or injury. The more we can learn about you in the first session, the closer we can get to meeting your needs and goals.
If you have specific goals in mind already, don’t be afraid to bring this up during the consultation. By walking into our wellness center, you’ve shown the willingness to improve your condition so why not go one further and tell us exactly what you want to get out of your time with us? Immediately, we can tell you our own goals and what you should be looking for in the coming weeks and months. With us both on the same page, we can get to work with confidence.
Examination - Once the initial consultation has finished, one of our three expert doctors will carry out the physical examination ensuring you feel comfortable before we get started. At all times, we pay attention to your needs so tell us if you feel uncomfortable, if something hurts, or if you want to take a breather outside the office. In our building, nothing is ever done without consent because we care for you.
Towards the beginning of the examination, we’ll look towards the basics and this includes the vital signs, reflexes, and blood pressure tests. From here, we’ll normally lead onto a series of simple exercises and movements. By doing this, we’re looking to get an overall picture of your health from motor skills to gait and everything in between. For Plantation chiropractors especially, the nervous system is important along with range of motion, muscle tone, and strength.
Once we have the basics from the simple exercises, we might then move to manipulation of the back to get a brief overview of the spine and other structures within your back and neck. If there’s any stimuli with the potential of causing pain in the near future, this will be brought up along with any other problems noted.
X-Rays - Although not always necessary, we may take x-rays and this normally occurs for specific conditions or if our doctors can’t quite get an accurate picture of your spine. With an x-ray, all serious spinal conditions will be spotted within seconds. In fact, we often have clients that can spot issues within their back despite no previous medical experience. With other body parts, the x-ray looks confusing and a blur of whites and grays. With the back, degeneration and misalignment seem easy to spot so we’ll show you your x-ray and explain the main issues (if any!).
Report and Discussion - In the final section of this first appointment with your new Plantation chiropractor, we’ll sit down and discuss everything we’ve found from the physical exercises to the x-ray. Often, patients will have the same questions floating around their head such as;
- How can you help?
- Will I need to come in every week?
- What is the treatment going to cost?
- What results can I expect to see?
- Will I be free from pain and discomfort?
Ultimately, these questions can only be answered once we’ve assessed all the information we have available including your exercises, health history, x-rays, and more. After coming to a conclusion, you’ll be talked through what we can do, how we’ll do it, a rough estimate for how long it’ll take, and the results you can expect at different intervals.
If you’re happy to go ahead and get onto the path of recovery, we can create a treatment plan that’s personalized for you and your position. In the past, there’s been a misconception that chiropractors in Plantation use a ‘one-size-fits-all approach’ when this simply isn't true. When we use this type of approach with our bodies, the approach actually fits nobody because the ‘average’ person just doesn’t exist. Instead, we personalize our service and ensure we create the right treatment plan to meet our combined goals.
Treatment - As soon as the formalities have been completed and everybody is happy with the plan, the treatment can begin and the extent of your injury will determine the frequency of your visit as well as the treatment used. In this very first stage, the aim is to provide relief from the pain (especially if it’s affecting your life every single day). Of course, chiropractic is all about the long-term and treating the root cause of the issue but this can’t be achieved without first removing the symptoms and reducing the pain.
For example, physical therapy might be a starting point alongside functional medicine, soft tissue massage, spinal adjustments, vitamin therapy, and nutritional help. Since we encourage interactive treatment, feel free to express any concerns you may have about the treatment you’re receiving. With constant communication, we can stick to the techniques that are providing you with the most relief because this is the aim of the first stage.
Despite the qualifications and thousands of hours of training and experience, we don’t know your body as well as you. During the relief stage, only you know what’s helping and what isn't so communication is very much a key part of the process.
At this point, we should note that your appointments are likely to be more frequent here than at any other stage in the process. As we progress to the second stage, which involves correction and restoration, the focus turns to fewer appointments and how you adjust between appointments. During the first stage, the focus is on providing relief and setting your body up so we can proceed as efficiently as possible.
Wellness Program - Of course, there won’t be an appointment every day and we can’t have a doctor live with you so, before you leave, you’ll be set up with a wellness program. As we just alluded to when discussing the second stage, this will cover your time between appointments and how you look after your body outside of treatment.
In the early days of relief care, this could include the avoidance of certain exercises, positions, or activities, the application of heat/ice treatment, and stretches you can perform in the comfort of your own home. As you progress, our superb team will then work with you to create positive routines and habits to suit your lifestyle. Remember, we’re trying to create a positive lifestyle for the future rather than just fixing the problem and then sending you on your way.
For all Plantation chiropractors, the ultimate aim will be to have you ending treatment confident in the knowledge you’re in a better position to live through life without the issue ever returning. While surgery and medication will remove the problem, they don’t deal with the underlying issue which is where chiropractors differ in their approach.
As you might have guessed, your wellness program will be personalized depending on your habits, hobbies, and activities. By the end, you should have good spinal alignment alongside a healthy diet, a great exercise program, and a positive mental attitude.
